asound master toggle doesnt unmute
People whose multimedia keyboard keys are not working by default (or users of lightweight WM like awesome/i3 etc) set up the keys themselves.
It used to be a well known solution to use amixer to handle sound up/down/mute keys. For example see gentoo wiki.
But in Ubuntu the command
amixer -q set Master toggle
works in one direction - it mutes, but doesnt unmute.
To be short - theres a bug filed, theres a script somewhere posted as a workaround, and theres a one-liner workaround Ive posted in the bug comment.
amixer -q -D pulse set Master 1+ toggle
